Rehearsal for Unfolding the Universe

Rehearsal for Unfolding the Universe, hair, glue, plastic, dust and collage on wall and ceiling, 66 x 36 x 30 inches, 2011
Collage from various magazine sources. They are placed together in a way that further drives the imagery outside of the body. Other elements like hair, dust and patches of glue are added to establish an absurdity of production. This assembly, like all of my work, reflects connections between self and the outside world, be it everyday or cosmological.

Continuing with paper from magazines I decided to physically cut out sections that were based on the placements of ads on the opposite page.

Breaking Out of Myself and Into Something New
January 31, 2011

Breaking Out of Myself and into Something New, found paper, dimensions vary, 2011
Work in progress, soon to be 30 surgical tools with a work table and chair also made from paper.
Recently I began investigating the relationship of commodities to labor and use-value. I began working with found material to produce objects using only my hands. Surgical tools were appropriate for my investigation because they open and fix bodies. Tools, due to their use-value, carry specific purposes, but the social relations congealed within them are often pushed aside. By creating them from a discarded material, their modes of production are foregrounded while the use-value is compromised.
Paper mashed by hand into surgical instruments which include left to right: Wartenberg Pin Wheel, Bone Awl, Debakey Forceps, Rib Spreader, Finger Retractor, Joseph Scissors, Scalpel, Bone Saw, Nerve Hook and Repercussion Free Mallet.
