Absent Minded Monotonous Splendor

Absent Minded Monotonous Splendor
digital video, 3 minutes 30 seconds, 2010

A video project that animates the erasure and ultimate explosion of my self-portrait. Over the course of the animation, my portrait dissolves and is swallowed by the white of the screen. What is left are my own imperfections (wrinkles, moles, blemishes and stray hairs); eventually they become animated and explode into their own galaxy.  The audio is appropriated from the History Channel’s series “The Universe”. A deep voice discusses aspects of the big bang theory while fragments of my face generate their own cosmic shape. The video highlights the more tedious and absurd aspects of digital manipulation. It demonstrates the compulsive process and more performative elements in my work.
