	About
Travis LeRoy Southworth is a conceptual artist whose digital practice, active since the late 1990s, investigates the aesthetics of labor, perception, and the digital body in a world of manipulated images and online identities. 


 Southworth is a recipient of a Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts and an artist residency involving the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. He was also one of the first artists to create work on SuperRare in 2018. Southworth began integrating machine learning in his practice in 2019.

		<description>Works using AI, 2019 - Present
Travis LeRoy Southworth 
became interested in the possibility of using artificial intelligence in his work shortly after he participated in an artist residency in Switzerland, that involved a project with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in 2013. It was here Southworth became inspired by the colliding of subatomic particles to find hidden ones. Later that same year he wrote a proposal about the possibility of ‘colliding’ different types of digital images to form new ones, predicting the development of GAN imagery. At the time, however, when Southworth tried to generate interest in the proposal, there was little understanding of how such an idea could be realized—or even where to begin. It wasn’t until several years later that&#38;nbsp;


Southworth focused more on neural networks in 2018 and directly integrating machine learning in his practice in 2019. He was also one of the first artists to create work on SuperRare in 2018 and helped beta test Playform 2019. He was also using Runway ML in 2020, Midjourney, ChatGPT and Dall-E in early 2022.

Thresholds is a series of three projects of digital artworks created through GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks) and later on with the addition of my own computerized brush strokes. I use the word 'threshold' as it can be a boundary or a starting point of an experience. I like its connection to the words 'thresh,'meaning "to separate seed from a plant using a machine" and 'thrash,' meaning "to beat soundly or go over again and again."&#38;nbsp;Link to project

New Beginnings, Old Endings, Secrets Secreting (2019-2020) is a series of diaphanous portraits created in part with machine learning algorithms. Southworth’s artworks have an unrefined yet overly saturated quality to them. Closeups of smudged faces appear to disperse into featureless surroundings. Rooted in his previous work involving facial imperfections abstracted from beauty advertisements, this series embraces the artifacts of early AI-generated images. These flaws—raw and vulnerable—contrast sharply with the polished outputs of today, embodying a nascent authenticity that feels poignant and human.

In dialogue with John Baldessari’s 1971 seminal conceptual piece “I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art,” Travis LeRoy Southworth’s Algorithmic Ennui (I Will No Longer Make Boring AI Art) shifts the performative task of repetitive writing from human to machine, challenging notions of authorship, intent, and the aesthetics of boredom versus beauty Southworth outsources his slighly altered phrase to an early text-to-image generative artificial intelligence program, prompting the algorithm to endlessly simulate handwriting within notebook pages. Yet, as the AI system repeatedly fails at literal replication—generating scrambled phrases such as “I Art Longer,” “AI Not Me” and “I Will No Longer Art Or AI”—it produces moments of accidental poetry and mesmerizing abstraction. Terms of Service is a series of introspective text-based artworks surrounding existence, labor and value. The artist Travis LeRoy Southworth uses computer programs, not just as a tool but as an entity with which he attempts to outsource personal grief and contemplation through ‘artificially intelligent' software and machine drawn messages. Each piece exists a physically machine plotted drawing. Black and white plots are created on letter-sized paper, suggesting the possibility to be physically mailed, in hopes to initiate further communication. Link to project

Origins is series of AI generated artworks by Travis LeRoy Southworth that bridge ancient human expressions and contemporary digital communication. Drawing inspiration from Argentina's Cueva de las Manos, where prehistoric handprints serve as age-old testaments of human existence, Southworth crafts a series of works delve into the primal and symbolic nature of caves, mirroring our evolving journey into the digital realm. Southworth employs a combination of portraiture and color field images as the foundation of each work, feeding these into a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). From these ‘under-paintings’ the artist further employs an array of AI algorithms to shape each work. At first glimpse each cave appears still, but then slowly starts shift, seeming to breathe and have a life of its own. Link to project

Omnia Ludens—a poetic translation from Latin for “Everything in Play”—is a reflection on authenticity and artifice in the age of image creation and artificial intelligence. In this project Southworth seeks out the essence of AI diffusion models, which are trained on vast image datasets. His process involves repurposing printer test images—those ubiquitous mosaics of generic photographs, colors and shapes designed to maintain color accuracy—into AI prompts to generate new works. This intersection of mechanical reproduction and neural network appropriation reflects a new paradigm where anything imaginable can be manifested. Link to project

Artifacts is aseries of abstract works by Travis LeRoy Southworth. “Artifacts” is composed of 3:4 portrait sized fragments, merging human intention with machine-learning distortions in a symbolic interplay of form and error. Southworth chose the word ‘artifact’ due to its multi-layered meaning; from an object shaped by human craft to a distortion produced by technological interference. The work is meant to echo both the creative eye of the artist and the “glitches” that arise when machines interpret reality. By embracing the possibility of inaccurate observations or unwanted features, these compositions highlight the interplay between deliberate intent and the unpredictable outcomes of AI generative algorithms. 	Travis LeRoy Southworth (b. 1979, Honolulu, Hawaii) is an American conceptual artist working in digital media since the late 1990s. His work extends through Post-Internet and touches on aspects of computerized labor and self-perception in the age of image manipulation and social media. In 2017, Southworth began researching blockchain technology and machine learning in 2018. He contributed to the beta-testing of the SuperRare as well as Playform, an early website allowing artists to use artificial intelligence imagining tools.


Southworth's solo exhibitions have been featured in prominent venues such as Below Grand NYC, Undercurrent, Freight + Volume, and Mixed Greens. Additionally, his work has been part of group exhibitions at the Zurich Kunsthalle, The Museum of Contemporary Digital Art, The Trinity Church Museum, The Drawing Center, The Chicago Cultural Center, and The Bronx Museum of the Arts. His work has been written about in the New York Times, Artsy, Basler Zeitung, and Art Slant.&#38;nbsp;Southworth holds a MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from the University of Arizona.
Southworth’s series Detouched involving image manipulation and portraiture received a Fellowship in Photography from the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) in 2010. He also participated in a residency in Switzerland, that involved a project with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in 2013. It was here Southworth became inspired by the colliding of subatomic particles to find hidden ones. In early 2013 he wrote a paper about the possibility of ‘colliding’ different types of digital images to form new ones, predicting the development of AI imagery.&#38;nbsp;

Structure
The book is organized around dialogue, tracing how images and their systems shape selfhood, value, and belonging. I use the term in both its philosophical and technical senses: as a form of inquiry shaped through multiple voices, and as an interface through which humans and machines exchange signals, prompts, and commands. The book unfolds as a network of conversations between artist and image, human and machine, signal and noise, authorship and automation.




1.0 Intro: Early DialoguesAn in-depth conversation with a curator sets the tone for the book, offering insight into Southworth’s practice and evolving relationship with digital media. Through thoughtful questions and reflective answers, the dialogue explores identity, authorship, and what is an algorithm. It provides personal context and invites readers into the conceptual landscape behind the artworks.

Drawing heavily on portraiture, temporality, and computerized labor, Southworth’s work trivializes the beauty industry and challenges us to reflect on our own self-presentation. As an Image Correction Specialist – or, to the layperson, a photo retoucher – Southworth pulls content from his day job, salvaging digital detritus of what advertising companies label flaws. Reshaping this digital material in Photoshop, Southworth presents it in a new physical skin – imperceptible wallpaper, silk sculptures, and a collection of figurative paintings printed on canvas, paper, satin, or suede. Tiny pores, stray hairs, color adjustments, and blemishes become sustainable resources for Southworth’s paintings and sculptures. The bright and airy color palette of magentas, lavenders, and flesh tones, derived from the imagery, transcend a dreamlike atmosphere while clouding its origin of soft violence; a digital scalpel extracting and pushing pixels; imperfection is abstracted and beauty confounded. Floating in the space are Southworth’s silk sculptures. Suspended by wire, these objects are ghost-like, reminiscent of another lifeform, levitating between the two worlds of digital and physical, posing metaphysical questions of the state of being in a digital era. Hanging alongside the Photoshopped work are analog pieces created from the laborious act of mashing up beauty magazines. The amalgamation of imagery is illegible, creating a gritty, dirty gray, presented in the classic scale and format of portraiture. Ad, image, and origin are indecipherable, mirroring the confusion of self-perception within a culture inundated with digital manipulation and filters.  Pulling content from Southworth’s day job underscores the context labor plays as an artist today. Rather than juggle, Southworth disables the hurdle, enabling him to work as Artist and Image Correction Specialist simultaneously; a meta vocation in the complex world of freelance and capitalism. Within this workflow, creative freedom is unchained from time restraints and the artist’s dilemma burns: Does art imitate life or life imitate art?

Inconspicuously, the largest piece in the exhibition is the wallpaper installation, entitled Similar Seemingly Absurd Infinities. Southworth arduously removed dust particles from roughly 100 NASA space photos and overlapped the remains into a single image. Aptly and ironically, 70-80% of dust is made up of human skin, the largest organ in the human body. Subtly, Southworth presents us with an anti-portrait, humbly reminding us that we are all the same: ubiquitous, organic matter, dust, vulnerable inside and out, physically and digitally. In a culture inundated with self-centeredness, image, and manipulation, Southworth, literally and figuratively, saves the undesirable, forging its fragile nature into a looking glass and reminding us of our own human condition.

Statement

Soft Eulogies: Portraits from the Mempool is a series of 10,080 digital portraits, one for every minute of a canonical week. Each work is a time-based vigil for everything that has been declared “dead” in our feeds, markets, and lives. Details are tied to specific Bitcoin transactions from the mempool. It takes the length of that transaction’s confirmation time to draw, then settles into a minimal portrait built from a colored background, a faint skull silhouette, and the phrase “[something] is dead” at the bottom.&#38;nbsp;




Over the span of the project, thousands of small “deaths” accumulate into a larger meditation on value and loss in a media environment that constantly declares things over: “Bitcoin is dead,” “Portraits are dead,” “Truth is dead,” and so on. Each portrait is built from a p5.js, code-based walker line that traces a transaction’s waiting time. The line wraps around a faint profile trace of a skull and a minimal field of color. If a transaction was estimated to confirm in 5 minutes and 24 seconds, then the walker draws a continuous line within the portrait bounds for exactly that amount of time.

Examples of subtle drawings and text as each inscription leaves the mempool. Drawing time is based on transaction time. So if a transaction takes 10 minutes 25 seconds to pass, it will draw for 10 minutes and 25 seconds.

The profile being traced is based on a series of twenty-one skulls that echo the side-on faces found on coins and medallions. Where a coin preserves the profile of a symbolic figure, these works replace it with a skeletal silhouette, as if the currency itself has passed into an afterlife.

A “soft eulogy” is not the grand speech at a funeral, but the small, casual obituary one writes without thinking every time “X is dead” is posted online. It is the half-ironic, half-sincere way people bury ideas, technologies, and communities. Soft Eulogies treats those throwaway phrases as actual memorials. Each portrait takes one of these everyday obituaries such as “Artist statements are dead,” “Attention is dead,” or “Rest is dead” and gives it a skull and a trace of labor, turning a casual dismissal into a slow, persistent mark on the chain.

The release plays on a Genesis-inspired sequence: 10,080 works, one for each minute across seven days. Soft Eulogies unfolds as a continuous vigil structured around seven domains of death—Light, Code, Earth, Time, Media, Society, and finally Rest. Where the Book of Genesis describes the emergence of systems that make life possible, this project stages a reversed creation myth, charting the symbolic destruction of everything. 
A small number of 42 ‘historical’ transactions will be spread out: from the Bitcoin genesis block to the first transaction between Satoshi and Hal Finney, and onward to the present.

The series is built on a tightly constrained technical system that echoes Bitcoin’s own limits. Twenty-one base skulls that reference the 21 million BTC cap. Each is hand-drawn by the artist as SVGs, converted into javascript paths. The skulls serve as silo-containers for the walker drawings. These skulls borrow from both historical and contemporary iconography, from coin profiles to pop-cultural memento mori, and are algorithmically distorted according to each work’s transaction data so that no two silhouettes are the same. A p5.js script reads various Bitcoin parameters such as fee rate, transferred value, block height, and inputs/outputs to subtly modulate different aspects of the image. Some portraits resolve into sparse, almost monochrome heads; others become busier and more colorful, reflecting the varying intensity of the transactions that shaped them.





Soft Eulogies extends two key trajectories in Southworth’s practice: the time-based line of The Continuous Work Drawings (2012) and the obituaries-for-Bitcoin logic of The Revenant (2024). In The Continuous Work Drawings, a single unbroken line recorded the duration of the artist’s own labor, turning time spent working at the screen into a fragile, accumulative mark.
